Property Tax Relief Alone Won’t Protect Maine’s Aging Population

As Augusta’s new Property Tax Task Force takes shape, Maine Aging Partners founder Kaitlyn Cunningham Morse is urging lawmakers and the public not to mistake tax cuts for stability in aging.

“Property tax relief is worth fighting for, but it can give a false sense of security,” Cunningham Morse says. “I’ve seen a care home with dedicated leaders, caring staff, and a waitlist come within weeks of closing—without residents knowing. It wasn’t because people didn’t want to live there. It was because there was no coordinated support for housing and care when cracks started to show. Lower taxes alone won’t fix that.”

Even if you can afford to stay in your home, you need a plan for what happens if your health changes or your family can’t meet your care needs. Without accessible services and strong local care homes, older Mainers risk losing both independence and security. Planning ahead isn’t just smart for families—it saves the state money, too, because reacting in crisis always costs more.

Lower taxes are important, but they don’t protect a community on their own.
